Tianwan Nuclear Power Plant is located on Tianwan Bay, Lianyun district, Lianyungang city, Jiangsu province. It was originally planned to have four 1000 MW nuclear reactor units and proposed to expand additional 2-4 units. Phase I project utilizes Russian AES-91 pressurized water reactors, with a totally installed capacity of 2×1060 MW and a 40-year operation lifetime. The integrated localization rate reached at 70%. Construction on Unit 1 started on 20 October 1999 and began commercial operation on 17 May 2007. Construction on Unit 2 started on 20 September 2000 and came online on 16 August 2007. Construction on Unit 3 in Phase II began on 27 December 2012 and come online on 15 February 2018. Construction on Unit 4 started on 27 September 2013 and the cold functional test in primary loop was completed on 29 December 2017. Construction on Unit 5 in Phase III began on 27 December 2015 and the reactor building dome hoisting was completed on 20 September 2017, entering the stage of equipment installation. Construction on Unit 6 began on 29 October 2016, with currently under earthwork construction.
