The Ministry of Ecology and Environment of the People’s Republic of China (NNSA) attended the 63rd General Conference of IAEA

From September 16 to 20, 2019, the 63rd General Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) was held in Vienna Austria. Cornel Feruta, Acting Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency, attended and made a speech. Liu Hua, Vice Minister of the Ministry of Ecological and Environment and Director-General of the National Nuclear Safety Administration, attended and participated in related activities.

The General Conference, which is the most important conference hosted annually by International Atomic Energy Agency, is mainly devoted to discussion about the issues, such as nuclear safety, nuclear security, development of nuclear energy, application of nuclear technology, technological cooperation, and nuclear non-proliferation. This is also the conference where the senior executives of nuclear safety authorities of various countries meet. At the conference, the participants conveyed their best regards and condolences to Mr. Yukiya Amano, the late Director General of IAEA. About 3000 representatives from the member countries of International Atomic Energy Agency and related international organizations attended the conference and participated in related activities. The representatives of various parties expressed their great interests at the Nuclear Safety in China, the White Paper recently published by the government of China. The White Paper fully embodies the efforts and commitment made by the government of China in terms of nuclear safety, they said. The representatives expressed their appreciation at the open attitude assumed by the National Nuclear Safety Administration of China on nuclear safety. China provides beneficial experiences for other countries which is developing a nuclear industry, they said.

During the conference, Liu Hua had talks respectively with Cornel Feruta, Acting Director General of IAEA, as well as Juan Carlos Lentijo and Dazhu Yang, Deputy Directors General. They exchanged their opinions on deepening the cooperation between IAEA and China and signed the Agreement on Cooperation in Fields of Nuclear and Radiation Safety. During the conference, Liu Hua respectively met with Daniel Iracane, Deputy Director General of OECD Nuclear Energy Agency, as well as senior executives of the nuclear safety authorities of the U.S., Canada, South Korea, United Arab Emirates, Viet Nam and other countries. They exchanged their opinions on the issues of nuclear safety they were commonly interested in.

In addition, while attending the 13th policy group meeting of NEA Multinational Design Evaluation Programme (MDEP), Liu Hua discussed about the matters relating the MDEP meeting which is to be held in China in 2020. China will keep in touch with various parties to ensure that the meeting is held successfully and is regarded as a milestone, Liu Hua said.
