On October 21, Researcher Fan Zhiwen, an official in International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) visited the Southwest China Nuclear and Radiation Oversight Station, Ministry of Ecology and Environment of the People’s Republic of China (hereinafter referred to as the MEEP/SWCNROS) and gave a lecture on IAEA framework, function and regulatory standard system and carried out in-depth research and communication on the nuclear safety and environment supervision of radioactive waste, uranium ore and associated ore and nuclear facilities decommissioning management.
Fan Zhiwen systematically introduced the development process, organization structure and functions of IAEA, the IAEA regulatory standard system and the process of compiling and publishing regulatory standards. He also introduced in detail the standard system of IAEA on radioactive waste, uranium ore, and associated ore. The supervisors of MEEP/SWCNROS put forward the problems encountered in the supervision practice including the disposal of the radioactive waste near the surface, cross-border transportation of waste radioactive sources and the radioactive waste and the disposal of extremely low level radioactive waste and discussed with Fan Zhiwen.
This exchange is a good fusion of the IAEA radioactive waste management and domestic supervision practice, it opened up the international vision of the supervisors, which enable them to understand the international leading edge of the disposal of radioactive waste, uranium ore and associated ore and decommissioning, peer practice and relevant laws, regulations and standards. This is helpful to improve the nuclear and radiation safety supervision level of MEEP/SWCNROS.
