On September 18, 2019, Liu Hua, Vice Minister of the Ministry of Ecological and Environment and Director-General of the National Nuclear Safety Administration attended the 63rd session of the IAEA and signed the “Practical Arrangement for Cooperation between the National Nuclear Safety Administration of the People’s Republic of China and the International Atomic Energy Agency in the Field of Nuclear and Radiation Safety” with Juan Carlos Rentiho, the Deputy Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency.

China has always attached importance to cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). The signing of this practical arrangement will promote comprehensive cooperation between China and IAEA in the field of nuclear and radiation safety. The two sides will conduct technical exchanges, joint research and development, training and publicity in the field of nuclear and radiation safety, share nuclear and radiation safety supervision experience and knowledge, and draw on international advanced experience to introduce the latest practices and achievements in the field of nuclear and radiation safety. The Ministry of Ecology and Environment (National Nuclear Safety Administration) and IAEA will cooperate on the basis of the Joint International Center for Nuclear and Radiation Safety, which is being established, to support the implementation of President Xi Jinping’s commitment at the Washington Nuclear Safety Summit on ‘Promoting the National Nuclear Safety Regulatory System’, to help countries in need to enhance their safety regulatory capacity and contribute to the improvement of global nuclear power safety level.

During the meeting, the two sides also exchanged views on issues of nuclear and radiation safety of common concern. Mr. Rentiho paid great attention to China’s recently published White Paper on “Nuclear Safety in China”, saying that it fully embodied China’s investment and commitment in nuclear safety and demonstrated China’s efforts to build a fair, cooperative and win-win international nuclear safety system, and provided useful experience for other nuclear industry countries in the world.
