15 April 2018 is the first National Security Education Day after conclusion of the 19th CPC National Congress. Nuclear safety is an integral part of national security. To implement the spirits of the 19th CPC National Congress and enhance the people’s awareness of national security and nuclear safety, an activity held on 17 April 2018 in Nanjing city under the joint effort of the Jiangsu Provincial Nuclear and Radiation Safety Oversight and Management Center, the Provincial Environmental Protection Publicity/Education Center, and the Provincial Radiation Protection Association. More than 50 representatives from community residents, university students and media journalists were involved.

During the activity, the invitees such as community residents, university students, and media journalists visited the NRC, listened to the introduction by the professional staff to achievements obtained in nuclear and radiation safety regulation, accident emergency preparation and response, popularization of scientific knowledge, through which the invitees learnt about a lot of relevant knowledge about national security and nuclear safety as well as Nuclear Safety Act, that came into enforce since 1 January 2018. The invited representatives of the public and medias spoken highly of the nuclear and radiation monitoring equipment such as UAV, gamma camera, robot, monitoring meters, emergency monitoring vehicles. Meanwhile they watched closely at the performance of emergency devices in search of and treatment of radioactive sources in simulated radiation accident. Finally, the NRC staff patiently answered the several questions raised by the public and media on environmental protection of nuclear and radiation.

Witnessed by the visiting public and media representatives, the Jiangsu NRC entered into agreements on technical assistant and cooperation for radiation accident emergency monitoring and deposition with six stakeholders including social monitoring bodies, radioactive source distributors.

A number of news media such as China Environment News, Xinhua Daily Meeting Point, Modern Bulletin, Jiangsu TV were involved in this activity and made the related reports, with timely news release on cell phone news client, Wechat and news media platforms.

Through this activity, Jiangsu NRC provided the public with popularization of knowledge on nuclear and radiation protection safety, showing Jiangsu province’s emergency capability. This activity has played the positive role in raising the awareness of national security and nuclear safety culture, providing the correct guidance on the public opinion and preventing and mitigating nuclear and radiation risk.
